Usually when people think of safari animals they think of what are called the Big Five; leopards, lions, buffalo, rhino, and elephant. These massive and wild animals are often plentiful in many African reserves but that does not always make them easy to spot. For example, leopards are nocturnal and usually very well camouflaged. Sometimes, reserves specialize in certain animals depending on geographical allocations. For example, the Zambezi River offers large herds of elephants, hippos, rhinos, many species of birds and crocodiles. Game viewing can become tedious if you stay in one area too long. Make sure to hire a tour that travels a diverse area and offers a variety of flora and fauna as well as safari animals to see. Also, in order to get the most out of your wild African safari, it is best to go during the dry season where animals are more inclined to travel to water holes and vegetation is sparse enough as to not obscure your view. Although wild animals can be dangerous, no safari would be thrilling without that element of risk. However, precautions such as staying in your vehicle and not taunting the animals should be followed. Fatalities have been known to occur on safaris where tourists wanted to get just close enough for that perfect shot. Precautions such as never walking around outside without your shoes and no swimming in lakes and rivers should also strictly be followed back at camp. The magnificent animals of Africa are captivating and a safari is a great way to witness their true essence.
